The
climbing frames in these images are postwar artefacts that sit rather awkwardly
in their English village settings. In truth, the frames have been lifted
from inner city environments and are invaders of the countryside; an appearance
that is aided by the fact that each is in the form of some means of transportation,
offering children the fantasy of travel to other places. The series is influenced
by British science fiction movies of the 1950’s and 60’s that
often incorporated a silent invasion of the English idyll, placing in peril
that which the English hold most dear. It has often been argued that such
movies played on audience fears at a time when technology, the Cold War
and immigration seemed likely to bring about change even at the heart of
the English homeland. In this sense, the images play upon the idea of broken
defences and an unseen alien invasion. |
